Tondre Grapefield was initially planted in 1997 to Dijon clones 777 & 115 on rootstock 3309. The planting density is 1075 plants per acre, with rows on a NW-SE orientation. Yields are restricted to 3.5 tons per acre. Soils consist of decomposed granite, gravel, and sandy loam. The 2005 vintage was outstanding, with cool, even temperatures producing a high quality crop. The Pinot Noir harvest started on September 9th and finished on October 24th. The extended growing season produced fine, fully mature fruit, with a graceful style and very clear expression of the Santa Lucia Highlands terroir. The grapes are completely de-stemmed. Fermentation, most of which is whole-berry, is in open top fermenters with manual punch down for optimum extraction and structure with soft tannins. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to a combination of medium and medium plus toast Burgundy barrels, 50% of which are new and the remainder are 2nd and 3rd year barrels for malo-lactic fermentation and 11 months of aging. - Morgan Pinot Noir Tondre Grapefield 2006 750ml -
