Joseph Drouhin Puligny Montrachet 2006 750ml

The central part of the Cote de Beaune comprises an area predestined to produce great white wines, and Puligny-Montrachet is certainly one of its most glorious examples. The clay and chalky soil, which is very stony, has good drainage and warms through easily. The Chardonnay is the unique grape variety used to produce these great white wines. The House of Joseph Drouhin brings to the making of these wines its utmost care, in the respect of tradition. At the time of harvest, usually around mid-September, the grapes are hand-picked in small cases, then brought to the winery en Chavet, in Beaune. The grapes are gently pressed. The juice settles down for few hours before going into oak barrels. Once the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are completed, the wine is racked off its lees. It is aged in oak barrels for 9 to 10 months. The wines of Puligny possess a whole range of very distinguished and distinctive aromas : almond paste, fern, exotic fruits, amber and white flowers. Their acidity on the palate is rather subtle, allowing the intense smoothness and impressive lingering taste to come through. Admirably situated on a hill between Pommard and Beaune, with a direct southern exposure, Clos des Mouches is one of the most famous Premier Cru vineyards of Beaune. Kaesler Shiraz Old Bastard 2006 750ml

Single vineyard wine made from fruit sourced from our 1893 block of Shiraz, yielding less than 2 tonne to the acre, hand pruned and picked. These vines have deep roots that contribute to greater uptake of minerals, which adds to the complexity of the wine and also have access to moisture at deeper levels. The growing season started very generously with an unusually wet spring, but dried out nicely, with the tight clay sub-strata making the vines crawl over the line. They may be old but they are also wise and if you give them an inch, they'll be on compo before you can blink. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and matured in Burgundian oak for 19 months in our underground cellar. Bottled a la natural, absent was fining and filtration. The 2005 Old Vine Shiraz is a blend of 4 parcels of 45 year old Shiraz fruit from Kaesler vineyards. The grapes were harvested the second week of March 2005 and the wine was fermented in stainless steel static fermenters and pumped over twice per day. The wine was pressed later than normal to captilize on great tasting tannin, then transferred to new French oak. It was then racked post MLF, and returned to barrel. The wine was topped regularly with one racking at the 11 month stage. The total maturation in oak was for 15 months. The soil is a mix of Jory and Nekia. Both are formed from igneous rock and have a reddish-brown tint. This site, however, has less depth than similar soils in the Dundee Hills. Wine from this vineyard is typically very forward, with aromas of black cherry and cola. Approximately 625 cases are produced. It is mainly Nekia soil, which is formed from weathered basic rock. It lies at an elevation of 325' and was planted in 1983. This bottling is comprised of the Wadenswil, Dijon 777, Dijon 667, Dijon 115, and Pommard clones. The wine is firmer than Canary Hill in its youth but evolves beautifully after a few years in bottle to show black fruits and fresh, healthy earth scents. Approximately 650 cases are produced. Ken Wright Pinot Noir Mccrone Vineyard 2008 750ml

Located in the Yamhill-Carlton District, this is a densely planted vineyard (1 meter x 2 meters). The sedimentary soil, know as Wellsdale, is extremely well drained and promotes early ripening. Elevation is 400' with a south-southwest inclination. Slopes are 5 to 15 degrees. Half of the vineyard was planted in 1992 to the Dijon 115 clone grafted on 3309. The second half was originally planted to Dijon Chardonnay clones but was grafted in 2000 to the Dijon 777 clone of Pinot noir. The wine from this site is powerful, dense and deeply colored focusing mainly on black fruits. Approximately 700 cases are produced. Don and Carole McCrone are the vineyard owners. Ken Wright Pinot Noir Nysa Vineyard 2008 750ml

The Nysa vineyard was planted in 1990 to own-rooted Pommard and Wadenswil. Located in the heart of the Dundee Hills between Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit with a southeast to northeast inclination. The soil is Jory soil. The nose exhibits a mix of red and black fruits. The wines are forward, textural and elegant. Approximately 350 cases are produced. The vineyard is owned and managed by Michael Mega. Vineyards planted in the Dundee Hills of the northern Willamette Valley provided the start for the modern wine industry of Oregon. These initial plantings took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The most common soil type of the area is described as Jory. These soils are volcanic in origin with basalt as the mother rock. They are unusually deep for hillsides, often 6 to 8 feet to bedrock. Ken Wright Pinot Noir Savoya Vineyard 2008 750ml

Savoya is the first vineyard directly owned and developed by Ken Wright Cellars. The vineyard is located in the Yamhill-Carlton District northeast of Carlton. Planting began in 1999 with 4.5 acres of clones 777 and 115 on phylloxera resistant rootstock. Total planted acreage as of spring 2002 is approximately 17 acres. Vine spacing is 6.5' x 4' and the elevations averages 450'. The soil is comprised of marine sediments known as Wellsdale and Willakenzie. These are sandy soils which drain quickly and hasten the ripening process. Our first commercial crop, 2002, has produced a muscular wine that has aromas of dense black fruit, seared meat, cedar and anise. Approximately 240 cases are produced. After selecting out the best of the best Pinot Noir grapes for the 'Alazan' cuvee, Byron Kosuge decided to produce 'Tobiano' with the high-quality remaining fruit. 2004 was an unusual vintage, says Kosuge. We had a very cold spring, with widespread frost across the Casablanca Valley, which led to a small and somewhat uneven crop. In my native California, wines from a vintage such as this can be both over and under ripe at the same time, so I was somewhat apprehensive about the potential quality of the wines from early on. It turns out that it's pretty hard to get over ripe Pinot in our vineyard in Casablanca, so we hung the fruit out longer to let the less ripe fruit catch up. Rated 94 - The 2006 Chardonnay reveals high acidity. When I tasted it at age 12 months, it had still not had any SO2 added, and it was still on its primary lees. I have written at length about Kongsgaard's belief that Chardonnay has to first die in the barrel, then resurrect itself, and unless a winemaker has the guts to watch that happen, it is doubtful they will achieve the complexity that Kongsgaard does on a routine basis. The 2006 is young, primary, and elegant with plenty of citrus and tangerine oil characteristics as well as hints of quince and crushed rocks. Kreinbacher Oreg Tokek Old Vines 2006 750ml

New to the Michael Skurnik Wines portfolio as of 2008; Kreinbacher is located in Somlo, a tiny wine region approximately 100 km east of the Austrian Alps, on steep basalt volcanic slopes centered around an extinct volcano. Somlo produces excellent quality dry white wines that rival the more known Tokaj. Mainly native Hungary grapes are grown here: Juhfark (Sheep's Tail), Harslevelu (Linden Leaf), Furmint and Olaszrizling (Welchsriesling). The wines are full-bodied and fiery with a salty pure mineral character, bright acidity and a rich texture. The estate was established in 2002 by Jozsef Kreinbacher. The vineyards are located in the prime section of the hill and are farmed organically. Often this yields just slightly to its ostensibly lighter sibling in my estimation, but not this time. This is the best Reserve I've tasted here, and sensational Champagne. First take a Champagne of exceptional polish and detail. Then take a Champagne of amazingly distinctive terroir, redolent and atmospheric. Then drink, and understand why it's my personal favorite Champagne in my own portfolio, and a poster child for farmer-fizz. The current bottling is 80% 2005 and 20% 2004, and as always 80/20 PN/CH. It's the wine we know and love, with the fine-fruited creaminess of '05, and maybe even greater length. The (very low) dosage also seems to register more this time; the focus and silken precision have never been finer, and the length never more impressive. VOS (Very Old Sherry), is a new designation awarded by the Consejo Regulador in Jerez to those wines certified as being over 20 years old. Unlike most Sherries, which have an average age of between 7 and 20 years, all the wines in the certified bottlings are OVER 20 years old (not just the average). The Lustau VOS Amontillado solera is located in the Sacristia of their cellars in Jerez and dates back to 1940. Lustau Tintilla De Rota Pre-phylloxxera Sherry NV 750ml

Certainly the most unique wine in the Lustau portfolio. Tintilla de Rota is the name of a red grape grown in the sandy soils around the town of Rota. While this grape can trace its origins to the 16th century, it largely disappeared in the 1950s when the vines were uprooted in favor of an American military base. The grapes are sunned for two-three weeks and then placed in tubs and covered with esparto mats to prevent contact with the air. These are then left for about a month and periodically stirred before being pressed. Fermentation begins before pressing takes place. The resulting grape must is fortified to 17% alcohol and then aged in casks. Lustau bought small quantities in the late 80s and early 90s, keeping some casks in their bodegas from which present stocks originate. As far as we know, no other bodega is marketing a similar wine. The wine itself, while dark and sweet, is redolent of ripe fruit, and is lighter than Pedro Ximenez, for example. Rated 94 - Perhaps the best value dessert wine in the Lustau portfolio. This extraordinary Cream Sherry seeks to replicate the ancient style of Cream Sherry that was discovered quite by accident. Trading ships sailing to the Indies in the 16th century frequently carried butts (barrels) of sweet sherry lashed to their decks or in their holds as ballast. After travelling through the tropics, it was discovered that the heat and humidity had matured the wine and given it a wonderful smooth texture. Lustau has recreated this process by heating and controlling the amount of air allowed in the warehouse where the East India Solera is matured. Wine maker notesThe vines from this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard are maintained with the emphasis of low yields and intense fruit. If you have had the past vintages of this MARA wine then you know the wines have been packed with flavors. The color is dense purple with the aromas of black raspberry, black cherry and chocolate. The wine is full bodied with lots of glycerin. As stated this wine is packed with all the flavor profiles that this Old Vine Russian River Valley vineyard hands out. This cuvee is a selection of millerendage grapes, or grape clusters that are smaller and have a higher skin to juice ratio thereby giving the wines more structure and power than wines made from the rest of the vineyard. This time consuming cuvee is not made every vintage as the conditions must be perfect to produce the type of berries necessary. The crop is 100% destemmed and slightly crushed before to be transferred into stainless steel tank. The punching of the cap is done twice a day BY FOOT. The wine is then aged in French oak barrel (50% new and 50% one-year old) for 12 months. Beautiful aromatic intensity, with hints of morello cherry, white pepper and chocolate. The tannins are ripen and delicates, the acidity well-integrated and the black fruits aromas still very pure. Terroir: The grapes for the V.V. bottling come from a total of 10 separate lieu-dit, including La Justice, Les Crais, Murot, Seuvree and Carougeot scattered throughout the village, with various blendings of clay and limestone and thus can provide a wonderful expression of all their separate strengths within the final assembly. Tasting notesThe flavor calls to mind the sunshine of the Langhe hills; the bouquet is reminiscent of spice, tobacco, cinnamon and ripe fruit, with undertones of very fine wood. Color is garnet red, lively and intense, with slightly orange hues, but it is on the palate this wine fully reveals its magnitude, character and complexity: velvety, round, with soft tannins, well balanced components and remarkable persistence, it confirms the bouquet's subtly spicy vein, with notes of liquorice and vanilla. Wine maker notesBarolo, undoubtedly the noblest of Nebbiolo varietals, finds one of its highest expressions in Marcarini's Brunate cru, resulting in an austere, majestic wine, with perfectly balanced acidity and tannins, indicating ideally ripened grapes. The label is a portrait of a woman, Caroline's great grandmother as a young wife, painted by her happy husband, Caroline's grandfather, who baby-sat Caroline when she was a little girl. Caroline created the cuvee as a tribute to them both, this lovely adorable wine, formed in the pure love of a small girl. This is a fascinating bottling of this wine; the dosage seems to elevate the 2004 grassiness, and the wine is surprisingly dry-tasting and Riesling-like. I suspect its fruit was tamped down by disgorgement, and it is dry at 24 g.l. RS (which would fall into feinherb at many German estates) and would be a killer pour for your cheese course, somms. And it's delicious, especially if you like Nahe Spatlese or demi-sec Vouvray. In effect you use this as you would a Kabinett wine; it even has hyacinth and wisteria notes, and lavender on the finish. Plus brioche and acacia-honey, with a suave sweet lick of hive-buzz . Where else can you get a sweet Champagne that's 100% Grand Cru, apart from Selosse? Yields are restricted to 3.5 tons per acre. Soils consist of decomposed granite, gravel, and sandy loam. The 2005 vintage was outstanding, with cool, even temperatures producing a high quality crop. The Pinot Noir harvest started on September 9th and finished on October 24th. The extended growing season produced fine, fully mature fruit, with a graceful style and very clear expression of the Santa Lucia Highlands terroir. The grapes are completely de-stemmed. Fermentation, most of which is whole-berry, is in open top fermenters with manual punch down for optimum extraction and structure with soft tannins. Twelve Clones is Morgan Winery's Santa Lucia Highlands appellation blend of Pinot Noir. The 2007 Morgan Twelve Clones Pinot Noir is produced from top quality Santa Lucia Highlands vineyards. Morgan's organically farmed Double L Vineyard is 44% of the 2007 blend, and contributes complexity with 12 different clonal selections of Pinot Noir. The cool Monterey climate and strong Salinas Valley winds combine to form a very long growing season, creating intense, ripe flavors with balancing acidity. Although 2007 was typically cool and windy, this vintage shows a lot of intensity due to high stress on the vines from a dry winter preceding a cold, wet spring. Summer and fall were uneventful which resulted in normal hang-time and a clean harvest. Grapes are hand-sorted in the vineyards; at the winery the grapes are again sorted by hand before being completely de-stemmed. Small, open top fermenters with manual punch downs are utilized for optimum extraction while maintaining an elegant structure. Neyers Chardonnay El Novillero Carneros 2006 750ml

I first visited Burgundy in the spring of 1980, and the highlight of the trip was a dinner in Meursault, at the home of the late Guy Roulot. I adored Guy's wines and had long regarded him as one of Burgundy's best vintners. We tasted a number of extraordinary wines at that meal, but the one that stood out was his 1964 Meursault 'Perrieres', a Chardonnay as close to perfection as I could ever expect. We had just begun Neyers Vineyards and my hope was someday to produce a Chardonnay that stirred my blood the way this one did. The Perrieres vineyard in Meursault rises to 250 meters or so in elevation, and faces southeast to form a natural amphitheater. It takes its name from the deposit of small pebbles in the soil there, a geological peculiarity found no where else in Meursault. These pebbles add a natural minerality to the wines, a characteristic we also find in our El Novillero Chardonnay. There's a similar rocky deposit in the highest portion of the El Novillero vineyard, which is also 250 meters in elevation and faces southeast.
